What is a Swim a Thon Fundraiser?

In this case, a swim a thon takes the idea of swimming laps for example and turns it into a full fledged fundraising event.

If a swimmer thinks he can safely swim 25 laps, or swim that many laps in a certain amount of time, he’ll write that as his goal on his swim a thon fundraising sheet. He then goes out and asks for pledges or donations based on how many laps he can swim at the swim a thon.

People write in their pledges, then after the event, the swimmer collects the money, gives it to the program, and you total it up!

How to Use the Swim a Thon Template

With any a thon fundraiser, it is key to have instructions how to raise money via either pledges or flat donations.

Once you download the swim-a-thon template, but before you hand it out, be sure to fill in:

1. The time window in which your swimmers will be completing laps. (e.g. 30 minutes)
2. The pool size in which all of your swimmers will be swimming (e.g. 50 meters. or 25 meters)
   
3. Date of the Swim a Thon.
   
4. When pledge money will be collected.
   
5. Your swim program name and a short note explaining what the funds support.

What Swim-a-thon Format Should My Team Use?

Choosing the right format for your Swim a Thon is essential to a successful fundraiser. Your fundraiser should be formatted depending on the age of your swimmers.

If you have a large program with younger and older swimmers, consider a different goal for each with an a thon for each age group. Below are some ideas for what goals best suit each age group.

High School - Timed swims work great at this level. Set a thirty or sixty minute window and let swimmers complete as many laps as they can. This creates competition and gives pledgers an exciting goal to follow.

Middle School - Shorter lap goals, such as fifty or seventy five total laps, help swimmers stay focused. A mix of strokes can also be included to keep things interesting.

Elementary School - Younger swimmers do best with simple lap counts or even relay style events. Keep the focus on participation and fun. You can also shorten lanes or use kickboards to help everyone take part.
