What is a Shoot A Thon Fundraiser?

If you’re reading on, you’re probably wanting a quick run down on what this style of basketball fundraiser is. So what is an “a thon” fundraiser?

An “-a-thon” fundraiser is an event where participants repeat a measurable activity… like a three point shot, and collect donations tied to that effort. Donors either pledge a set amount per unit of activity (for example, $1 per shot made) or give a flat contribution to support the participant’s goal.

In this case, “a thon” fundraisers are called shoot a thon fundraisers made specifically for basketball, sometimes called hoopathons. They’re both the same, just different names! Here you take a certain amount of shots per player, ranging from say 25-100, and for every shot that player hits, it counts toward your pledge goal.

For example, Grandma Stewart wants to support her grandson Jason whose middle school basketball team is running a shoot a thon fundraiser. Jason shows his grandma the sheet and his coach has done everything right.

He’s printed the Teamfi shoot a thon template we provide for free, wrote a quick note at the top thanking supporters and explaining what the fundraiser is for, then notes that his team will have 100 shots each for their shoot a thon, and parents and relatives can attend the shoot a thon in three weeks time when it kicks off in the school gymnasium.

Grandma Stewart is confident Jason can knock down all 100 free throws he’ll be shooting, and she’s willing to offer an amazing $1 per made shot.

Jason gets pledges from six family members at the following pledge total per shot made: $1.00, $0.50, $0.50, $0.25, $0.10, and $0.05. He makes 65 out of 100 free throws, earning:

  • $65.00 from the $1.00 pledge
  • $32.50 from each $0.50 pledge
  • $16.25 from the $0.25 pledge
  • $6.50 from the $0.10 pledge
  • $3.25 from the $0.05 pledge

Total raised: $156.00

After the shoot a thon, pledgers in attendance get money to the coach then and there, while Jason collects the money from pledgers not in attendance and gets it to the coach the next week.

What Shot Type Should My Team Use?

Varying shot types by age group is a good way to best optimize your shoot a thon. It’s hard for younger kids to shoot three-pointers and older players may find layups a bit on the tedious side. Sure a high schooler could go 100 for 100 on a layup shoot a thon, but where is the fun in that? By modifying your shoot a thon fundraiser around your age group, it will improve your team’s experience!

  • High School - Three point contests are fun, bring out fans, and provide an entertaining way to fundraise for your shoot a thon. This type of contests incentivizes competition between players as they go for the win.
  • Middle School - Free throws are a happy medium and provide a good friendly competition for middle school basketball players. Three-point shots at this age are fun, but balancing makes and misses is important, and the more makes you get, the more money raised.
  • Elementary School - The layup is a great way for elementary school student teams. A simple relaxed technique driven fundraiser, limits the amount of shots each player gets to prevent fatigue.

You can even lower the hoop and help them dunk to build up some fun. For younger players, make it more about having fun then being harsh about makes and misses.
